Date: Friday, August 28, 2020, 8:30 am – 12 pm.
Instructors: Adrian Werner and Christina Solorzano Rivas, Flinders University, Australia.
Description: Students will be introduced to the basic concepts and management issues related to salt water intrusion, including a selection of simple methods for obtaining initial estimates of the seawater extent in coastal aquifers. Students will learn basic applications of the Python code for developing simple seawater intrusion models.
Date: Friday, August 28, 2020, 1 pm – 4:30 pm.
Instructors: Gu Oude Essink and Huite Bootsma, Deltares, Netherlands.
Description: Refer to the course title.
Date: Saturday, August 29, 2020, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
Instructors: Chris Langevin and Joe Hughes, United States Geological Survey (USGS), USA.
Description: Refer to the course title.
Date: Sunday, August 30, 2020, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
Instructors: Perry de Louw, Deltares, Netherlands; and Vincent Post, Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), Germany.
Description: Students will obtain a broad overview of the field methods available to study coastal groundwater systems. In the morning session, we will discuss the theoretical aspects of field-based approaches to determine groundwater flow patterns and salinity distributions in coastal aquifers. The focus will be on water-level measurements, geophysical techniques, and hydrochemistry. We will show how seawater intrusion can be detected and monitored, and how it can be distinguished from other salinization processes. In the afternoon session, we will demonstrate the measurement principles in the field using the local USGS facilities.
Registration includes all 3 days of training by world-renown experts. Food includes morning coffee, lunch, and light am/pm breaks. We will attempt to accommodate food preferences and allergies. Participation in SWIM2020 training courses requires registration for the SWIM2020 conference. Attendance is limited to the first 25 paid registrations.
